We're Special

We started our first topic 'We're Special' by being visited by the aliens from 'Here Come the Aliens' who have decided to come back to earth to learn all about the human race. We all took Boo Boo home to show him about where we live. We spent our first week thinking about our feelings with the help of the 'Mr Men'.  We thought about what makes us happy, grumpy and worried and practiced showing these emotions.
We then looked at how our bodies are similar and different to the aliens.  We labelled a body outline and used George, the school skeleton, and 'Funny Bones' to explore the parts and importance of and recreate the human skeleton.  We became artists and made a clay face with all the necessary features.
Also for the 'We're Special' topic, Mrs Taylor helped us understand the sense of hearing before we made our own musical instruments.  We explored the other senses too with food tasting, smelling and feeling games and I spy walks.
We thought about our own families and enjoyed sharing photographs of our families and friends and understanding the role undertaken by each family member.

Thank you ever so much for providing materials for our musical instruments and for sharing your family photos. The children really enjoyed their first topic in Year 1.

This half term we also had some special visitors.  The dentist came to explain what different types of food and drink do to our teeth and how we should look after them.  We also had a go at Judo!
During the second half of the autumn term Puffins learned about animals.  They enjoyed visits from the Blue Cross charity as well as Teaching Talons and their mobile zoo.  We classified animals into amphibians, reptiles, mammals, fish and birds and focussed on pets, birds, farm and wild animals.  We also found out about endangered animals.
Thank you for the wonderful take home task creations - they were fantastic!
During the half term Puffins also enjoyed some football sessions.

Spring term 2 - Island Adventures

Through the Keyhole

In January we looked through the keyhole at homes long ago and comparing them to the houses we have now.
We also investigated different materials to see which was most waterproof for the roof of the three little pigs house.
Higgins Museum

We visited the museum where we did jobs that used to be done in the olden days as well as had a go at washing with dolly's, mangles and flat irons.
We also learnt about our town and had a trip to the library where we heard the story of The Highway Rat.
