We became historians looking at one of the earliest forms of transport, the Viking longboats. We studied photos of a longboat that archaeologist found and thought about what the pictures told us about the boat, how it was made and why it may have been designed that way. It made us ask lots of questions for enquiry and understand how historians do not know the exact facts but use artefacts and great discoveries to try to answer questions about the past. To end of session we had great fun creating our own Viking Longboats.
Whilst learning about measures in Maths we went outside and began to measure distance. We measured the distance we could jump, throw and run. To measure accurately we used metre sticks, a giant number line and a tape measure. It was great fun competing against each other to get the best scores and furthest distance thrown or jumped.

At the start of this half term we all planted some Sunflower seeds. We learnt about what plants need to grow well in our science lessons and took care of the seeds each day. We kept a sunflower diary to show the progress of how the seeds have grown and measured them each week. The tallest sunflower in our class so far was 11cm!
To celebrate Sir Tom's 100 challenge this week Puffins completed 100 star jumps!
Spring term was a little different this year due to lockdown. We were really pleased to have a Year 1 Bubble class of key worker and vulnerable children in school though.
As a Year 1 community, both learning in school and at home we learned through the themes of 'Island Adventures' and 'Where the Wild Things Were'.
Island Adventures helped us learn about the UK and contrasting localities between Toddington and a Scottish Island. We learned through the books of Katie Morag and researched through maps and geographical features.
We learned all about different groups of animals, their habitats and what they eat. We loved seeing 'Teaching Talons' mobile zoo virtually and Mrs Cornelius brought in Pixie the dog and Troy the tortoise for the children to meet.
Autumn Term
We started the year thinking about how special we are and how we would explain what humans were like to aliens! We read lots of Mr Men books to explore emotions and drew our faces and made them out of clay. Have a look at some of the musical instruments we made. We thought about our bodies and how we can stay fit and healthy.
Our next theme was 'Through the Keyhole' where we looked at our own houses and identified different types of house. We learned about the Great Fire of London and how the material the houses were made from and how they were built caused the fire to spread quickly. We even made our own Pudding Lane! We had a really fun week of Christmas activities and Father Christmas even came despite us being in 'Bubbles' to stay safe!
